Depends on the year and model. The 2.2l L model will be a little softer and less power. Plus the interior isn't as nice. If you don't mind the Outback wagon, they have the same engine as the RS plus a little more utility.

Quite a few RS's for sale here http://www.rs25.com/forums/f171-fs-cars-sale

It seems you're talking about a used Impreza. In the U.S., depending on the model year, that could mean either a 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, or 2.5 litre engine. I had a 2.2 litre 1987 model. It was a great car. The "base" model that year was the 2.0, I believe. I doubt there was a great deal of difference between the two in power; perhaps the 2.0 got a bit better gas mileage. Due to the fact that they're heavily constructed cars and equipped with all-wheel running gear, Subarus are not mileage champs regardless of engine. These attributes are well worth the additional gas cost.

If you're looking for a performer (rally, DE, etc.), you need the 2.5 litre engine, and probably a turbocharged version (The normally aspirated 2.5 is currently 170 HP; turbocharged engines starts at 246 HP and go up to 305 HP in the STI). If you're looking for a good car to haul groceries, transport kids, go out for the evening, etc., about any Impreza will handle your requirements. I think the 1.8 litre versions are probably very hard to find now; I believe the engine was discontinued quite a while ago.

The impreza L is a 142hp 2.2L, the Impreza 2.5RS is 166hp. The power isn't the main difference, as it has a stiffer suspension, 16" wheels and tires vs the L's 15" if I remember correctly, plus a more aggressive body package, better seats and steering wheel, and some different interior materials. I personally wouldn't want an L, except maybe for a rally car or an ice racer, just because it would be a cheap chassis, but that's a whole different arena. I would take the time to find an RS if you can.

I thought the 2.5 RS was the basic model impreza. You mean the difference between the RS and WRX?
